When Times Get Tough, the Tough Get Going:

Community Spirit is Alive and Well in the Comox Valley

In 1950, local volunteers raised over 17,400 pennies by asking residents to each put a penny on 5th Street to create a “Block of Pennies”. This row of pennies helped build the changing rooms at the outdoor pool. Even though the economy at the time was slow, the community still managed to show their support for an important local project. The organizers had to carry these donations to the bank using wheelbarrows – the response was so overwhelming!

In 2009, a new challenge has been issued. Yes, our economy is in recession but the spirit of community giving is still alive and well in the Valley. The Comox Valley Land Trust is out to beat the goal set in 1950 by challenging residents to place twoonies on 5th Street at the 39th Annual Market Day on July 17th.

Local residents who want to show their community spirit and prove that when tough times come to the Comox Valley the people who live in this unique area of the world are willing to step up and show their support. The
“Block of Twoonies” will see a long line of twoonies in the middle of 5th Street, all contributed by residents attending downtown Courtenay's Market Day.

Jack Minard, the executive director of the Comox Valley Land Trust says “We think this event will show that the generous spirit of this community is alive and well. All proceeds will go to ongoing regional conservation efforts of the CVLT and the Conservation Strategy's Community Partnership. Proceeds will be used to conserve watersheds, linked natural areas for the protection of biodiversity and the beautiful vistas of the entire region”.

Let's make the longest line of twoonies ever seen on Vancouver Island! Be a part of this fun event by being a volunteer for the day. Help us beat the record set back in 1950!

The Comox Valley Conservation Strategy (CVCS) is an exciting initiative currently being undertaken by the CVCS Steering Committee and Community Partnership to create a region-wide strategy for land conservation in consultation with the community and decision-makers in the Comox Valley. The main purpose of the CVCS is to prioritize sensitive ecosystems, linkages via expanded riparian strips and designated upland wildlife corridors and to create a new and exciting watershed-based land use planning framework. The current process has us working together with Regional and Municipal planners, engineers and politicians to develop a new way of doing business. Click here to find out more.

Thank you!
We want to thank everyone that has made a pledge or donation towards the purchase of Lannan Forest. Despite our efforts the Regional District did not have the highest bid. Read more in a short article by Frank Hovenden.
