Volunteer your time, knowledge and expertise
|
Volunteers are the lifeblood of your Land Trust and with only one paid staff member, there are dozens of jobs, large and small, for which the Land Trust needs volunteers.
|
What needs to be done? We've listed our volunteer jobs in the following broad areas:
|
|
Volunteer Team Coordinators
Key people with a special flair for managing people and projects. We need motivated and enthusiastic people who understand the incredible value of volunteers and who will help us lead other volunteer teams and administer the volunteer program.
|
|
Media & education The Media and Education Team gets our message out to the public through the media and other educational initiatives.
|
Grant proposal & report writing These volunteers can help ensure that funds are available to maintain our organizations core activities. The tasks require a good knowledge of the workings of our organization and thus are best suited for longer term volunteers
|
|

|
Special events & fundraising These volunteers organize special events and raise money. They increase public awareness of the Land Trust and celebrate our achievements. |
Legal land protection work These volunteers are interested in legal measures to protect land, including conservation covenants. They may work with landowners, lawyers, appraisers, surveyors, government officials, other conservation organizations, as well as members of the general public who are interested in legal land protection options. This work is best suited for longer-term volunteers. |
|
Land protection fieldwork These volunteers focus mainly on fieldwork. As with legal work, this is best suited for longer-term volunteers
|
|
Office administration In the absence of a full time staff member, we need volunteers with administrative and office skills to help us keep the office running to serve our members, volunteers and the public.
|
How much time will it involve? That's up to you. There are small tasks that might take only an hour or so, and long term projects for people who would like to do more.
What will I get out of it?
the satisfaction of preserving some of the areas that make this Valley so special
the opportunity to meet people and make new friends
the chance to learn new skills and to teach the ones you have
valuable experience for your resume and for future employment
FUN!

The following Volunteer Positions are available now at
CVLT:
1. Friends of Covenants Program
(Coordinator for Hurford Hill Park):
This person ideally lives near Hurford Hill Park,
and often walks there. He or she will help CVLT to fulfill its
responsibility to protect the park by observing, recording and
reporting on the ongoing state of the park, and will be in a perfect
position to give early warning if something has happened, or is
happening in contravention to the Covenant. This person could also
recruit other interested neighbours to help with this work.
Invasive species of plants are a real problem locally and are
evident in the areas of the Covenants. A “Friends” group could
organize neighbourhood “Broom Bashes” and watch for such invasives
as Japanese Knotweed and purple loosestrife to name a few.
Full training would be given as to the types of activities allowed
by the Covenant, the types of vegetation to watch for and techniques
taught as to how to deal with them
2. CVLT Fundraising Team
The Land Trust is looking for interested individuals
to work on the development and administration of a fundraising plan
with our fundraising team. Grant writing and proposal writing skills
and experience would be a tremendous asset.
3. Volunteer Coordinator
The Land Trust undertakes several events each year
such as plant sales and bake sales and is required to maintain
various aspects of the lands we hold covenants on. We have
partnership agreements to undertake maintenance of the “One Spot
Trail” and the “Master’s Greenway”. As we move into the next phase
of the Regional Conservation Strategy we will require many
volunteers to assist in a multitude of activities such as Community
Outreach with Community displays and Information sessions, community
mapping and historical information gathering, planning and
evaluation meetings and the overall planning and direction of the
Land Trust itself.
To truly make the most of the incredible commitment and energy of
our community we require a Volunteer Coordinator to keep all these
wonderful people up to date and provided with the information and
tools to work effectively.
4. CVLT Board of Directors
We are always seeking new people for our Board to
direct and support our work. New Board members are elected to the
Board at our Annual General Meeting that will be held in April or
May of 2006.
We are particularly looking for new Directors who have involvement
with, experience in, or knowledge of First Nations,
archeology/history, real estate and land development and of course,
fundraising. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to become involved.
There are many ways to become involved and you too can be a part of
creating a legacy of lands and resources that we can hand on to the
next generations. This year, give a gift of community and help us
keep the Valley special.
